A rising number of women have never been screened for cervical cancer. Here are the risks

Nearly 1 in 3 women ages 21 to 29 in 2023 had never received cervical cancer screening. This proportion was up from about 1 in 8 in 2005, according to a new study published August 27 in the journal JAMA Network Open.

In most people, the immune system clears HPV without causing problems. In some, the infection persists and causes abnormal changes to cells in the cervix. These changes can progress from precancer to invasive cancer.
