Ransomware Attacks On The Healthcare Sector Are Skyrocketing
In the spring of last year a number of criminal hacker crews pledged to leave hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare entities alone until the Covid-19 pandemic passed. At least one ransomware gang saw that as an opportunity.

The Haven healthcare venture created by Amazon, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase is shutting down. The end of the venture, which launched with great fanfare three years ago in a press release from the three business titans, never really got off the ground with steady leadership and included several executives who came and left after short stints. One key hire, Dr. Atul Gawande, stepped down as CEO after a short time but remained on the board. A year ago, one Haven executive departed after less than a year in a key operations role, further adding to the often rocky rollout and execution of a healthcare company that many touted as a watershed moment in employer efforts to reign in healthcare costs and improve quality. But Haven said it did launch some pilot programs and those efforts would now be continued at Amazon, Berkshire and JPMorgan. Haven didn’t mention those efforts in a website announcement that it “will end its independent operations” at the end of February, the company’s website says. “In the past three years, Haven explored a wide range of healthcare solutions, as well as piloted new ways to make primary care easier to access, insurance benefits simpler to understand and easier to use, and prescription drugs more affordable,” Haven said on its website. “Moving forward, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan Chase & Co. will leverage these insights and continue to collaborate informally to design programs tailored to address the specific needs of their own employee populations.” CNBC reported Haven began “informing employees Monday that it will shut down” and “many of the Boston-based firm’s 57 workers are expected to be placed at Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway or JPMorgan Chase as the firms each individually push forward in their efforts,” the network said, citing “people with direct knowledge of the matter.”

Tech platform Change Healthcare (CHNG) enjoyed a sizable rally during the second half of 2020, steadily chugging past its pre-pandemic peak in mid-November to notch a Dec. 23 all-time-high of $19.08. Since then, the stock seems to have plateaued, with the $19 mark moving in as a ceiling in recent weeks. However, a pullback to a historically bullish trendline could keep some wind at the equity’s back, and even push it past this resistance level to register even more record highs in 2021.

It was not that long ago when it was heresy to talk about the consumer and healthcare in the same sentence. We, as consumers, did not help the situation. Many of us did not feel we knew that much about healthcare. It was generally something that was ‘done’ to us. As a result, we did not feel we had ‘standing’ or the ‘right’ to talk about it with the professionals to whom we entrusted our well-being. And a lot of the healthcare professionals whose advice we sought did not think we knew that much about it either. Some of them were quite happy keeping it that way. After all, the medical community had the language of science on its side. It was highly technical. It was obscure to most of us… and it was scary. So, many of us learned NOT to ask questions and basically do what we were told by the healthcare professionals we trusted.
