U.S. Hispanics: The Overlooked Stepchild Of American Healthcare & Why Startups Are The Answer

U.S. Hispanics are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to the American healthcare system. We’ve all heard stories of less than ideal health outcomes U.S. Hispanics have suffered in the past. As a Mexican-American, I too, know that story better than I wish I did. Up until last year, I spent nearly 6 years visiting my kid brother at the Texas Children’s Hospital who was in and out of Leukemia treatments until his last breath. Maybe it’s because the hospital was in Texas or maybe it’s because Leukemia disproportionately affects Latinx children; but, I realized most (if not all) of my brother’s neighbors were Latinx. Throughout endless conversations with their worried parents, I quickly learned how little these families understood their own children’s prognosis or care instructions. Furthermore, these Latinx families had been lucky enough to be the ones to find themselves at a world class hospital; yet, they all knew many families like themselves that hadn’t had a chance to save their loved ones largely because of a failing, unsustainable, and non-scalable healthcare system.

Control Healthcare's Front Door Or Be Pushed To The Side Entrance

We live in a world of immediate gratification that stops at healthcare. Executives in this industry use Facebook, Apple and Netflix personally, while many hospitals still fail to appreciate the transferable qualities that need to be applied before patients walk through someone else's front door.

How Digital Tools Could Make Measurement-Based Behavioral Healthcare Possible

Measurement-based care has transformed the identification and management of physical health diagnoses. By the 1950s, blood pressure cuffs became the standard of care for monitoring high blood pressure, contributing to the significant reduction of deaths due to heart disease. Glucose test strips, first introduced in the mid-1960s, were able to accurately assess blood sugar levels quickly and effectively. Both seemingly small inventions helped shift the health paradigm from intuition to quantification, changing healthcare dramatically.

GP machine learning tech raises £2.1million

Abtrace, a health-tech start-up, has raised £2.1 million of seed funding to support its machine learning technology and transform how chronic and long-term health conditions are detected, monitored and treated. The AI tool integrates with GP practice systems to help identify which tests or treatments a patient with a long-term health condition might benefit from. The company said it acts as an “intelligent layer on top of the electronic health record”, with the system suggesting actions based on an individual’s medical history, as well as learning from a wider pool of data points. One example the company provides is that when a patient with diabetes attends a GP surgery for a routine blood test, the Abtrace system will show the GP or HCA, which other tests are due, and suggest additional tests which the patient might benefit from. It hopes to then minimise the need for repeat trips, ensure key tests aren’t missed, and automate routine interventions if needed. The tool has been tested across several GP practices, where it demonstrated a 30 per cent reduction in the number of HCA appointments needed and halved the number of repeat prescriptions that required a GP appointment to process it. The company now plans to develop the tool further to spot the early signs of emerging conditions, by taking into account a patient’s symptoms or health issues over a period of time. Digital innovations in primary care have been a focus for us here at HTN, with our first ever digital primary care conference taking place last month. At the conference, we were joined by Katherine Church, Chief Digital Officer, from Surrey Heartlands CCG, who focused on digital programmes and approaches. We also welcomed Dr Ursula Montgomery for a keynote on the future of general practice and Dr Minal Bakhai for our second keynote, focusing on a digital primary care.
