AI in hospital billing added nearly $1B in healthcare costs over 2 years

AI-driven billing for more medically complex inpatient stays has resulted in nearly $1 billion in additional healthcare costs over the last two years, according to new analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
More than 60% of hospitals and health systems are now using AI-enabled technology that can scan and analyze lab reports and document patient visits to identify secondary diagnoses, BCBSA said, citing BAM.ai.
An artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm increased aneurysm detection, identifying 55 true-positive brain aneurysms that radiologists had missed, representing a 39% relative increase in detection.
