Because of an aging population, there is a 6% year over year increase in the demand for care. However, there is hardly any innovation introduced in the care market. There are all sorts of sensors in the patients’ room (bed matts, door sensors, movement sensors) but these sensors generate many false alarms. Kepler Vision’s Night Nurse (KNN) solution is a computer vision – based body language detection system. By combining machine learning and computer vision, KNN is able to detect falls, patient discomfort and abnormal behavior, notifying care staff so they can respond.

This year, both the overall winner (aka Michael Seres Award) and Pollen Winner Awards goes to Critical Healthcare Information Integration Network (CHIIN). CHIIN community health workers in rural Africa often face an inability to access up-to-date medical information primary due to poor Internet access, limiting their ability to provide treatment as standards of care evolve. CHIIN’s solution is a free-for-use SMS automated messaging system that provides validated information on the causes, presentation, management, and complications of context-relevant diseases, with no need for Internet access.
